Cat owners frequently treat their cats as they would treat their kids such as buying them stuff that they know both will enjoy. It is quite interesting to note that both have the same reaction, first anticipating what the toy is then dancing around in joy when they finally receive it. Such is the joy on your cat’s face when they get their cat toy that you would always want to get them toys just to keep that happy face in place. However, with an influx of cat toys in the market today, it is hard to choose a safe and good toy for your cat. Here are some examples that may help you in your choice.

  • Toys for Active Cats

There are cats that are truly hyperactive, running and jumping around the house like his tail is on fire. If your cat belongs to this category, the best toy for him is something round like a small ball. It may also be a toy that can be rolled indoors or outdoors, usually attached to a ring. This type of toy is best for your active cat since it makes him run and go through tunnels. It will be quite a surprise to see the enjoyment on your cat’s face with this toy.

  • Humorous Cat Toys

Since even cats have a sense of humor, it may be a good idea to give them a humorous toy, something that can make them laugh. These types of toys are quite expensive although definitely appealing to your cat. These toys have several distinct parts, each with its own function. Some toys can talk, which will encourage your cat to answer back. Try placing the toy in front of him and observe their conversation. It is definitely quite the sight to see. There are also cat toys that dance at the slightest touch. It is usually attached to a spring that moves at the slightest touch. Observe your cat twist and turn in trying to imitate the movement of the toy. He will surely have a fun time doing it.

  • Cat Toys for Relaxation

Like any living thing under the animal kingdom, cats also get tired. And when they do, they would like something to help them unwind and relax. There are toys that cater to this need. It will ideally be something soft, furry, and comfortable to touch. When your cat will get hold of this cat toy, it will purr with contentment as it totally relaxes his body in preparation for sleep.

  • Safety of Cat Toys

For children, toys are regulated as to what age should be handling a certain toy. It goes the same with cats. There are a lot of toys in the market for your cat but not all meet the safety regulations issued for cat toys. And not all toys are suitable for your cat since it depends on his age, size, and preference. Avoid buying toys that are bigger or even heavier than your cat. It may pin him down and suffocate your cat. Likewise, avoid buying toys that are too small since these are a choking hazard, not only for your cat but for children as well. A safe toy to have for your cat is a feather toy, made with the softest fabric dyed in natural colors, with feathers attached to it. It will unquestionably be the highlight of your cat’s day. These toys does not cost much, with a range of $3 -20.

  • Common Cat Toys

There is also the usual type of toys that every cat loves, whatever their breed, size, and color. An example of this is the catnip. Made in a variety of shapes, it is just right for your cat to handle. It is made using natural substances, usually stuffed with ground flowers and leaves. These toys also are cheap to purchase, about $3-10 per piece.

You cat does not only need good food, a place to sleep, and lots of cuddling to be happy and content. It also needs to occupy its time through its favorite pastime that is playing with its toys. Let him play!

8. Training your Cat

It is a common misconception that cats cannot be trained. People prefer dogs rather than cats because of this thinking. They think that since dogs are always seen doing tricks and obedience stuff, they are the only ones that can be trained. But contrary to this belief, cats can be trained to follow a few simple commands. With a bit of patience and knowledge on training animals, your cat can be your star pupil in a matter of weeks.

The best time to start training your cat is when they are still young kittens. It is quite hard, sometimes next to impossible to train your cat if they are old, since their habits and preferences have already been formed, very similar to human beings. And also like a young human being, young cats cannot hold their attention for a very long time. Take this fact into consideration when you start training your kitten. You can have several training sessions a day with a maximum of five minutes per session. After every session, make sure to appreciate the effort that your kitten is doing by giving them a hug or a pat afterwards.

Patience is the important trait to have. You have to remember that cats have a different level of comprehension as compared to humans. It will take them more time to understand and follow what you are trying to say. Start with the basics. Here are some of the basic tricks to teach your kitten.

1. Sit

To let your cat understand what you want him to do, put one hand on your cat’s bottom area while your other hand is under his collar or neck. Lift his neck slightly and in slow motion until the kitten is sitting down. Repeat this while saying sit, pronouncing the letter t with emphasis.

2. Come

While standing at a short distance from your kitten, hold up his food or a treat to him and call his name. Repeat this action as you get farther away from your cat.

3. Stay

It is natural for a cat to be mischievous and active, making this command a bit difficult to instruct. It should be repeated several times to make sure that your cat understands what you want him to do. Take hold of your cat’s collar while saying stay. Look your cat in the eye as you move slowly away from your cat. If he moves, do it again, and release your hold on him as you increase the distance between you and he does not move from his place.

4. Potty Training

First take note when and how often your cat goes to relieve himself, including the number of hours between each occurrence. The next time your cat goes potty, you can predict the time he has to urinate or defecate. Follow him when that time is near and lead him to the litter box in the bathroom. Every time your cat goes, lead your cat to the litter box so he would be familiar with it. Once he is, change the location of the litter box and watch if he will be able to recognize and find it. If he does identify the litter box, then it can be placed outside so he can develop the habit of doing it outside.

This is just a guide to help you out in training your cat. Since every cat is different, it will depend on your intuition and creativity on how to make your cat obey you. The length of time before you can successfully train him may take a few days to several months. He may be stubborn at times but keep on trying. The frequency of your training is the key for him to retain what you teach him. Just have the patience to teach him.

9. Healthy Cats

What are the indications to show that your cat is in perfect health? Is he having enough nourishment? Does he get enough sleep and rest? Does he have enough time for play and leisure? Knowing your cat’s habits and condition is part of being a responsible owner. Having a pet means that you are responsible for his welfare. A pet is considered to be an important part of the family so should be treated accordingly.

When your baby cries, you can immediately sense if there is something wrong or if they are just seeking attention with him telling you what’s wrong. It is like a sixth sense.

It should be the same with your cat. As the owner, you must have the intuition to know if there is something wrong with your cat or he is fine. There is no course to teach you how to know this. It just takes a little common sense. Here are some pointers on how to get to know your cat better.

Observe your cat’s habits and everyday routine. Give him a thorough inspection if you sense that there is something wrong like skipping a meal or not doing his usual routine. An abrupt change in habit may signify something wrong especially if you know him to be hyperactive and he does stick to his normal playing schedule.

The maximum number of hours that a cat sleeps daily reaches 20 hours. Anything beyond that should be a cause for alarm. Take note of his actions whenever he is awake. Cats are usually active, curious, and getting into trouble. If not, there might be something seriously wrong.

Cats are considered to be very sensitive creatures. Even simple events such as relocating can make them sick. This is why felines are territorial creatures. They have a fine sense of direction that even if you give them away, they can still come back.

How does one keep a cat happy and healthy? Aside from your daily care and sustenance, you also need to take your cat to the veterinarian for regular checkups to ensure that he is truly healthy. A cat also has their vaccinations to complete although sometimes the expense of these vaccinations may be more that what your budget can handle. If this happens, talk to your veterinarian. He may have a payment scheme for you so you can keep to your budget as well as maintain the vaccinations for your cat.

Eating right is also a part of being healthy. Left-over food may not contain the right nutrients and may even be harmful to your cat. Since making your own cat food does not cost too much, you may consider doing such thing. There is also cat food available in your grocer that you can get for your cat. Add supplements and multivitamins to supplement any lacking nutrients. Consult your veterinarian on what brand of food and supplements is best for your cat.

It is also advisable to check the eating habits of your cat. He may be eating more than his usual, causing him to gain weight and become fat. Fat felines usually have a decreased activity which may be construed as being sick if this is not his normal habit. Obesity also is not good for a cat since it may cause several cardiovascular problems. They may look cute but it is definitely not healthy.

Cats also love to receive treats and lots of love and caring. They know what they want and will probably take advantage of it. It is up to you to give them what they need irregardless of what he wants. If your cat is overweight, let him exercise and give him more activity especially when awake. Also give him toys that will push him to burn some of those fats and allocate some time to play with him. It does not only help him shed some pounds, but brings you closer to each other, strengthening your relationship as owner and cat.
